No matter where you plan to stay when you travel, you would always like your stay to be a happy and memorable one. If you plan to stay in a hostel, you would even more importantly like to enjoy your stay, since hostel life is one that can be thoroughly enjoyed, by following a few basic guidelines.
How To Enjoy Your Hostel Stay
- Be safety conscious. Do not live in a dream world, where you believe that everyone is honourable. While hostels are not unsafe, and while travellers, on the whole, are very decent, there are chances that there might be one or two of them whom you may need to avoid. Therefore, get to know your fellow travellers and be aware of your surroundings. Also, be alert as to where all the safety and fire exits are in the building so that you can make use of them in any emergency.
- Watch out for the safety of your belongings and keep them locked up when you are not in the room. Most hostels offer locker facilities. However, it is wise to have mini locks on luggage that holds expensive items, so as to ensure their complete safety. Also, don’t just leave your things lying around, and inviting others to steal them.
- Carry along your wallet at all times and ensure that your most valuable items such as your money, traveller’s cheques, credit cards and ID are in it. At night, while you are asleep, slip your wallet into your pillowcase so as to ensure complete safety. You do not need to do this noticeably – most travellers are honest people and might be offended if they feel you mistrust them.
- If you seem to have a hostile room mate or is you find that over time, you are just not able to get accustomed to a rather nasty habit that your room mate has, there is nothing wrong in going over to the manager of the hostel and requesting for a change in rooms.
- Let your loved ones know your itinerary so that both of you will be able to contact each other in case of any emergencies.
- Keep photocopies of important documents along with you and give another copy of these to a trustworthy person. Another option would be to keep a soft copy of them, so that you can easily access these for any claims or replacements if the originals are lost.
- Ensure that your mobile phone is will work outside your home country and check with your operator for international roaming facilities. This will come in handy for any emergencies.
